Finding the Dress
The dress shopping to date has been a bit hit-or-miss.
The dresses I ordered from Ann Taylor didn't impress me, so I took them back to the store this past weekend. And while the J. Crew dress looked great on the model, it only succeeded in making my hips look HUGE. (A pity. The fabric was really nice, at least.)
I think I've settled on a gauzy ivory number from Neiman Marcus, but I need to do some work to get it right:
- First, I need to exchange the dress for a smaller size. After looking at the sizing charts, I thought I'd need to bite the bullet and order a larger size than I usually wear. But when I tried it on, I felt like I was positively swimming in it. (Not good when it's a sheath ... but kind of ego-boosting at the same time.) I went to the snooty Neiman Marcus location in Tysons Corner to try to exchange it, but since they don't have a bridal department, I'll have to exchange the dress online.
- Second, and perhaps more urgent: The dress is see-through. This must be corrected, as I don't intend to showcase my skivvies as I walk down the aisle. I need to find a good local seamstress to sew a lightweight, opaque liner into the dress.
Now on to the bridesmaids' dresses, I guess. I'm not planning on getting too worked up about that until after the new year, when the spring dresses start coming out. But I suppose it doesn't hurt to at least keep an eye out and start gathering ideas. The wedding "colors," tentatively, are pink and brown, which probably means pink dresses with brown trim (or something like that).
Comments
Don't even get me started on J.Crew dresses. My preliminary plan was to wear a J.Crew dress for our wedding, but my hips ended up looking massive, too. I mean, my hips are big, but this was just obscene and wrong. So that's how I ended up in a suit I already had from Target!

My colors are also going to be brown and pink for my october wedding. I am having the hardest time finding bridesmaid dresses. I actually want the opposite with brown dresses and a pink ribbon or trimmed in pink. Let me know if you have any luck finding any. miss_star_lite@yahoo.com

I ended up going with solid-color two-piece dresses at David's Bridal, but while I was shopping around, I saw some nice dresses here. Most of the brown dresses that have a colored trim are paired with a taupe color. Style 961, though, is dark brown with pink trim.
I'd bookmarked this dress from David's Bridal, too.
Other sites with nice dresses (and the option for contrast-color sashes and other add-ons):

It's more work-intensive, but if all else fails, you might get a plain brown dress and have a seamstress add pink ribbon trim later.
Hope this helps!
